What if Chinese had Linguistic Markers for Counterfactual Conditionals? Language and Thought Revisited

چکیده

This study critically examines the widely held belief that the Chinese language provides no consistent linguistic forms for expressing counterfactual ideas (Bloom, 1981). In Study 1, native speakers of Chinese identified counterfactual sentences from a large corpus of Chinese texts. A number of syntactic and/or lexical forms are found to be highly predictive of counterfactuality. Aspect modification and other markers emerge as potentially universal linguistic mechanisms for counterfactual marking. Study 2 demonstrated that these linguistic markers significantly influence readers' interpretation of whether a sentence is factual or counterfactual, even after semantic and pragmatic information was controlled. Study 3 showed that the counterfactual markers influence on-line sentence comprehension in a selfpaced reading paradigm. Taken together, the data reject Bloom’s conjuncture regarding Chinese counterfactuals and reveal cross-linguistic similarities and differences in linguistic representation of counterfactual thoughts.

Chinese Speakers’ Acquisition of English Conditionals: Acquisition Order and L1 Transfer Effects

This study examines how the syntactic complexity of English conditionals and first language transfer influence Chinese ESL learners’ acquisition order of conditionals. The differences in English and Chinese conditional constructions are presented in the paper. Brown’s (1973) Cumulative Complexity principle is employed to determine the syntactic complexity of six conditionals: present factual, p...

Comprehension of factual, nonfactual, and counterfactual conditionals by Iranian EFL learners

A considerable amount of studies have been established on conditional reasoning supporting mental model theory of propositional reasoning. Mental model theory proposed by Johnson- larid and Byrne is an explanation of someone's thought process about how something occurs in the real world. Conditional reasoning as a kind of reasoning is the way to speak about possibilities or probabilities. The a...

Even if after If then conditionals

This study evaluates how people represent “even if” conditionals when they have to integrate them with previous “if then” conditionals and also make an inference. The terms in the premises were ordered to facilitate their integration (Figure 1: If A then B; Even if B C). In half the cases, the “even if” conditional was expressed with a negation instead of an affirmation (If A then B; Even if no...

Understanding Counterfactuality: A Review of Experimental Evidence for the Dual Meaning of Counterfactuals

Cognitive and linguistic theories of counterfactual language comprehension assume that counterfactuals convey a dual meaning. Subjunctive-counterfactual conditionals (e.g., 'If Tom had studied hard, he would have passed the test') express a supposition while implying the factual state of affairs (Tom has not studied hard and failed). The question of how counterfactual dual meaning plays out dur...

If the real world were irrelevant, so to speak: The role of propositional truth-value in counterfactual sentence comprehension.

Propositional truth-value can be a defining feature of a sentence's relevance to the unfolding discourse, and establishing propositional truth-value in context can be key to successful interpretation. In the current study, we investigate its role in the comprehension of counterfactual conditionals, which describe imaginary consequences of hypothetical events, and are thought to require keeping ...
